In 2016, the Armchair Quarterbacks Fantasy Football League gathered at my father's Irish pub for our annual draft. Everyone brought a device, connected to the pub's internet, and got ready for a perfectly ordinary online draft.
The internet service provider saw the sudden swarm of laptops and apparently decided we were launching a cyberattack from an Irish pub. They shut down the connection. After an hour on the phone, we finally got back online—just long enough for them to shut it down again.
By then, teams were being auto-drafted, the clock had beaten us senseless, and the party was over. Everyone went home. We finished the draft the following night after work, which is roughly as festive as renewing your vehicle registration.
I decided our draft would never again be held hostage by Wi-Fi—or reduced to twelve people silently staring into twelve glowing screens.
The very next day, frustration turned into a plan: create a draft experience that was old-school, interactive, entertaining, and just technical enough to make it feel alive. Every owner would have to get up, walk to the board, and physically make a pick. That meant conversation, suspense, celebration, and—most importantly—merciless heckling.
I spent the following summer building a massive magnetic draft board, custom player labels and stands, button-controlled timers and sound effects, a homemade draft-order lottery machine, and enough personalized details to make a normal draft kit look like office supplies.
The first year went off without a single problem. The league loved it. The board became the centerpiece of the party, and Draft Day became an actual event instead of a room full of people ignoring one another behind laptops.
I will never go back to a standard online draft. One ruined party created a tradition—and I have been gloriously overbuilding it ever since.
